Lois Ruth Atkins, 89, of Fairfield, died at 4:40pm on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Aperion Care in Fairfield. For 20 years, leading up to her retirement, she had worked as a homemaker for the Department of Children and Family Services, transporting foster children as well as making home visits with them.
Lois was born on July 11, 1933, in DuBois, Pennsylvania, to George and Mary Jane (Berry) Garthwaite. On June 4, 1955, she married the love of her life, L. Vernon Atkins, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons Dan Atkins and Doug (Sherry) Atkins both of Fairfield, two daughters Diane (Stanley) Vaughan of Fairfield and Denise (Julie Full) Atkins of Staunton, IL, eight grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, a brother Samuel David (Shirley) Garthwaite of Latrobe, PA, a sister-in-law Lois Garthwaite of DuBois, PA, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband L. Vernon Atkins, a daughter Deborah (Atkins) Malan, a daughter-in-law JoLynne Atkins, two sisters Gene and Grace Garthwaite, along with five brothers George, Clayton, Robert, John, and Richard Garthwaite.
Funeral services for Lois Atkins will be at 1pm on Wednesday, April 5th at the Wesleyan Church of Fairfield, on Rt. 45N, with burial to follow in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30pm until the time of service at the church. Memorial donations can be made to the Compassion Pregnancy Center and will be accepted at the time of service or at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
